Port Macquarie and Koala Hospital

In the morning we stopped at the Holbert’s Oyster Farm in order to get to know more about them unfortunately they don’t have any tour. We bought a plate of 12 oysters for us to share and we were very disappointed of their totally different taste and texture than the ones we had in Europe.

After 3 hours’ drive we reached Port Macquarie and went for a 30 minutes walk in Sea Acres Rainforest during which we not only enjoyed the greenery and nature but also saw quite huge goanna and unique birds.

Port Macquarie is well known for Koala Hospital which is the only one in Australia and possibly in the world. It was established in 1973 and it operates only with the donations got and volunteers because no governmental sponsorship is provided. One of the options of donations is to adopt the koala but unfortunately it can’t be taken home and still has to stay in the hospital.

How do those koalas end up in this hospital?

The person who sees the injured koala or suspects the illness calls the hospital and then the koala is given 2 names – the first one is the town/ area koala was found and the second one is the first name of the person who made a call. On admission koala’s name, age, illness and treatment are written on the board and kept there until it leaves the hospital. After the treatment koalas have a recovery period after which they are brought back to the area where they were found.

A bit about one of the most popular animals in Australia. The word ‘Koala’ reflects the animal lifestyle and means no water. They are very picky of what they eat even though it’s only eucalyptus leaves but from 50-60 eucalyptus species that exist each koala eats only 10 of them. Also koalas are slow and lazy animals which usually sleep between 18 to 22 hours per day.

Painted rocks at the Breakwall walking path in Port Macquarie was a unique spot providing lots of positive thoughts and a relaxed walk.

Overnight stay in the remote mountain house nearby the farming plots with the extremely huge terrace, BBQ and breathtaking view to the sea finished the day.
